Week 13

I chose this image for the cover because I think the pattern and contrast will attract viewers. The words are not very bold and I think it has a nice effect. The type of the headline is repeated in the name of the author.

WEEK 11

I created these layouts in Indesign. I used the rectangle tools to create the boxes and gave one a drop shadow. I made my text only one column width long and utilzed the negative space. For the digital photography section, I made my photos as large as I could, added one column of text, and a large headline. This simplifies the composition of the layout quite a bit. There are only three elements to arrange with in this layout. When a photo was vertical, I rearranged those three elements. My magazine ended up being 68 pages in length. Nearly half is layed out in the box format for computer graphics. And the other half is layed out with large photographs. I have some images which are full page spreads.

What I like about the painting is that it is in low relief so parts of the painting stick up from the painted surface including the spear, wings of the dragon, and the eyes and reigns of the horse. I have always loved this painting and have done research on it. The story of Saint George killing the dragon was popular during the 15th century. It was a mythical tale used to teach a moral lesson. Only the most naive took the stories in their literal sense. In this case the moral lesson is faith in God and the triumph of Christianity over evil. Attributes of Saint George are the dragon, lance, white steed, knight, halo, and armor. The symbolism behind these attributes are:
Lamb- represents innocence and purity
Dragon- represents Satan and sin, devourer of innocence, Dragon at the foot is sin conquered, Black is symbolic for evil
Steed- grace, White is symbol for purity
Armor- protected by the power of God
Halo- holiness
Lance- symbol of martyrdom
Saint George killing the dragon was part of an alterpiece. Alterpieces are usually painted on sanded wood panels, have several folding shutters which are kept closed on weekdays and opened for mass. Saint George Killing the Dragon was a central image of an altarpiece. It included four narrative scenes of the saint’s Martyrdom.

Preserved
I really enjoyed these jars full of random objects in need of preserving. The artist's statement said that they contain bizzare and randomly juxtaposed objects that create a sense of uncertainty. The artist says that the jars mimic the 17th century cabinets of curiosity. After reading this I further researched these cabinets and found them incredibly interesting and they are something that I would like to learn more about. Another reason I found these jars interesting was because I found personal relationships with their contents. For example, one jar had a hair curler in it just like the ones my grandma used to wear. Also in this same jar was a rubber worm. It's strange, but the rubber worms I found in my dad's tackle box were one of my favorite toys when I was a kid. The other thing I found interesting about these jars was the quantity. There were so many of them in this gallery.

I liked these two pieces because they reminded me of the Joseph Cornell boxes at the art institute. I especially like the one on the bottom because it reminds me of myself. I feel that everyone looks at art as a portrait of themselves. Sometimes when you dont like a piece of art it's because it doesnt reflect you properly or you have no personal references to relate to the art. This piece reminded me of myself because I work at two libraries, and very seriously considered becoming a librarian at one point. This piece was made mostly out of books and paper and I think its magical.

Neighborhoods
Greektown
Left - Craft: I took the photo with a fast shutter speed to capture the motion of the chef placing the meat on the grill.
Concept: The concept for the photo was that Greektown is known for its cuisine so I thought that a picture like this would show off a prominent characteristic of the neighborhood.
Composition: For the composition of this photo, I got as close as I could to the chef and the grill, and waited until it started smoking to add another layer to the photograph.
Right- Craft: For this photo I did not use a flash so that the light from the sunset is the only light source.
Concept : A photo of Union Station at it's busiest, quitin' time. Union Station is a very important Chicago landmark, and located very close to Greektown.
Composition: I chose a vertical composition for this photo to compliment the verticals of the columns. I liked the way the light was centered between to very heavy darks. I also waited for the bird in the shot to be in a position of my liking.
Craft (how, techniques) Using the pen tool in adobe illustrator I created the letters of my name and the truck.
Concept (why, what) I chose to make a truck, because I really like trucks, and I also like the colors green and orange together. I made my rims purple for some added flare. I made the letters red because red and green are compliments.
Composition (arrangement, why, what) I made layers of shapes and arranged them to create the composition with a foreground and background.

Craft: Using the pen tool, I traced over the shapes of the photograph. Using the eye dropper tool I selected the colors for the shapes using the photograph as a source. I also used grouping, and copying to create the windows.
Concept: The concept is to create a digital illustration of a pixel photograph.
Composition: I cropped my photo to concentrate more on the vertical columns and dramatic lighting. I started with the background of the image first.
Craft: I created this digital illustration using the pen tool in adobe illustrator. I also used the gradient tool to fill in some of the shapes created with the pen tool. I also changed the opacity of some shapes. I also used layers to organize everything.

Concept: The concept was to digitally illustrate a photograph from a Chicago neighborhood highlighting a feature of it, in this case architecture.

Composition: I chose this photo for it's composition. I like the way that the the black on each side creates a focal point in the center. The bird, and the value range in the columns creates depth.

Critique: At the critique it was agreed that the two sides in shadow are to black and the edge of the shadows is to sharp. I added columns to the shadows to give it some value range and open it up a bit. Comments were made about the photo realism being the overall style.
